A region, not a country
The argan tree grows only in south-west Morocco — the Souss plain and the foothills of the Anti-Atlas, between Agadir, Essaouira and Taroudant. Every drop of argan oil in the world comes from there and nowhere else.
So "argan oil from Morocco" says very little: it is a tautology. The useful question is narrower — from which cooperative, pressed when, and how long after the harvest.
Why we buy from women's cooperatives
Cracking the argan nut still resists mechanisation: it is done by hand, against a stone. That work has always been done by the women of the Souss, and for a long time intermediaries captured most of its value.
Women's cooperatives reverse that: the producers crack, press, bottle and sell for themselves. We buy from them for two reasons, one ethical and one entirely self-interested — the money reaches the people doing the work, and a cooperative that presses on site can do so within days of the harvest.
What we do
Our kernels are toasted, then cold-pressed within 48 hours of harvest. No solvent, no refining, no additive or preservative. The oil goes into the bottle as it is.
That short window is what matters most. Oil from kernels stored for months before pressing loses part of its vitamin E and much of its aroma — and nothing on the label reveals it.
What we don't do
We don't sell cosmetic argan oil. It is a different product, from raw kernels, requiring a different chain — and we would rather do one thing properly.
We claim no certification we don't hold, display no customer reviews we haven't received, and attribute no medical properties to our products. An oil is a food. It has a taste nothing else replaces; that is already a great deal.
Ask us something
If anything is missing from this site — precise origin, pressing date, composition — write to us. It is exactly the kind of question a seller should be able to answer, and an inability to do so is itself an answer.
To go further, our article on the women's cooperatives of the Souss explains how the chain works, and our guide to spotting authentic oil applies to any seller, ourselves included.
